Frasers Group will be closing down the Harvey Nichols store in the city centre of Birmingham on 3 January 2027, as part of its larger strategy to reshape the luxury department store following its acquisition of the business in August.
What happened
Harvey Nichols' Birmingham store first opened 25 years ago in 2001, in the mixed-use development The Mailbox. A spokesman for The Mailbox confirmed that Harvey Nichols was preparing to leave the location.
Why it matters
The announcement of the closure comes as Frasers Group CEO Michael Murray reviews Harvey Nichols’ UK store network, with the group taking a different approach to its regional sites. Earlier this week the group had announced that it will be converting the Harvey Nichols Bristol and Leeds stores into Flannels.
Murray said Harvey Nichols occupies a different position from Flannels, describing the former as more female-led and internationally recognised, while around 95% of Flannels’ sales come from the UK.
Murray confirmed that Frasers had also acquired the buildings housing the Harvey Nichols stores in Manchester and Edinburgh and plans to invest in both locations rather than convert them to Flannels. The Manchester store is set to undergo refurbishment next year. Frasers is also in discussions with the Cadogan Estate over a potential overhaul of the Harvey Nichols Knightsbridge flagship.
